Muwanga Kivumbi Re-arrested in Mpigi Hours After Bail

Just a day after securing bail from the High Court’s International Crimes Division, former Butambala County MP Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi was apprehended again. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon in Mpigi town as Kivumbi was en route back to Kampala from Butambala, where he had spent the night.

Sources from his legal team confirmed the re-arrest, detailing how a vehicle intercepted their convoy, leading to Kivumbi’s swift removal. His current whereabouts are unknown, and no official reason for the detention has been provided by the authorities.

Kivumbi had been on remand for nearly seven months, having been arrested in January in connection with post-election violence. The prosecution accused him and others of carrying out acts intended to intimidate the government between January 11 and 17, 2026, including alleged attacks on a police station and an electoral commission centre, as well as road and vehicle destruction, which reportedly led to seven deaths.

Justice Susan Okalany granted Kivumbi bail, citing his fixed abode, suitable sureties, and the prosecution’s failure to prove he would interfere with investigations. However, speculation is rife that his re-arrest might be linked to strong criticisms he voiced the previous evening. Kivumbi reportedly accused President Museveni, his wife Janet, former Speaker Anita Among, and Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba of being responsible for Uganda’s political crisis.

He also questioned the legitimacy of Gen. Muhoozi’s Political League of Uganda (PLU), deeming it an illegal political outfit for someone holding the position of Chief of Defence Forces. Kivumbi expressed that his time in prison had strengthened his resolve to fight for a better Uganda, even if it meant facing further state action.
