Muwanga Kivumbi Re-arrested Hours After Bail Granted

Former Butambala County Member of Parliament, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, has once again been apprehended by security forces. The re-arrest occurred just a day after he was granted bail by the International Crimes Division of the High Court, following a period of 169 days in detention.

Kivumbi’s lawyer, Sam Muyizzi, confirmed the arrest, stating that his client was intercepted in Mpigi and taken away in a vehicle commonly referred to as a “drone.” Video footage circulating online appears to show traffic police halting Kivumbi’s vehicle, after which plainclothes operatives approached and escorted him into a white, unmarked van.

The former MP and 16 co-accused were released on bail on Thursday. Kivumbi was granted cash bail of Shs10 million, while his co-accused each received Shs1 million bail. The court had stipulated that the accused must report monthly and not leave the country without prior permission as their trial proceeds.

These individuals face charges related to terrorism, allegedly committed between January 11 and 15, 2026, in Kibibi, Butambala District. Prosecutors claim these dates saw attacks on a polling station and the Kibibi Police Station, which resulted in seven fatalities. The accused have consistently denied these allegations.

As of now, official reasons for Kivumbi’s re-arrest have not been provided by the authorities.
