Muwanga Kivumbi Re-arrested Hours After Bail

Muwanga Kivumbi, the Vice President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) for Buganda, has once again been taken into custody by security operatives. The arrest occurred on Friday afternoon at a roadblock in Mpigi District, mere hours after he had been granted bail by the High Court’s International Crimes Division.

Kivumbi was on his way home from prison, where he had been held for five months on charges related to terrorism, which he denies. Eyewitnesses reported that his vehicle was intercepted in Mpigi Town by police and other security personnel. The car was then directed off the main road towards the local police station.

As Kivumbi’s vehicle began to move, individuals in UPDF uniforms, some with their faces covered and armed, emerged from various points and surrounded the car. Kivumbi, who reportedly did not resist, was then removed from his vehicle and placed into a waiting “drone” vehicle before being driven away.

Security personnel prevented journalists and supporters from following the vehicle. The re-arrest took place shortly after Kivumbi had left his home, where a crowd of supporters had gathered to welcome him following his release on Thursday. He had stopped at several trading centers along his journey, interacting with his jubilant supporters.

Kivumbi had been granted cash bail of Shs10 million on Thursday after meeting the court’s requirements. His re-arrest raises questions, as details regarding any new charges or the specific reasons for his detention have not yet been disclosed.
