Following the recent xenophobic unrest in South Africa, Acting State Minister for Foreign Affairs Haruna Kasolo has called upon Ugandan returnees to leverage government programs designed to aid their reintegration and economic recovery.
During a visit to a reintegration center in Kyankwanzi where the repatriated citizens are receiving support, Minister Kasolo emphasized that the government’s commitment extends beyond ensuring their safe return.
The minister highlighted that initiatives focusing on skills development, wealth creation, and access to affordable financing are available to help the returnees rebuild sustainable livelihoods and contribute to Uganda’s progress.
“I encouraged them to take advantage of initiatives aimed at skills development, wealth creation and access to affordable financing so they can successfully reintegrate into their communities and contribute to Uganda’s development,” Kasolo stated.
This call to action comes as the first phase of a voluntary repatriation concluded, bringing over 1,100 Ugandans home after fleeing violence and property destruction. Kasolo also extended gratitude to President Museveni and various government agencies, including the UPDF, Police, and the High Commission in South Africa, for their crucial roles in the evacuation.
The government reiterates its dedication to protecting its citizens abroad and supporting those who return from crisis situations, ensuring they can become economically productive once more.
