Maziba Farmers Encouraged to Unite for Enhanced Productivity and Market Access

Farmers in Uganda’s Kabale District, specifically in Maziba Sub-county, have received a strong call to action: unite in organized groups to significantly enhance their agricultural output and economic prosperity. This plea was a central theme at a recent agricultural exhibition held at the Maziba Sub-county headquarters.

The exhibition served as a vibrant platform for farmers to showcase a diverse range of products, including crops, livestock, and value-added goods, alongside innovative farming technologies. Officials emphasized that forming cohesive farmer groups is crucial for improving production, adopting modern farming techniques, and accessing vital government agricultural programs.

During the event, agricultural experts and district officials highlighted the numerous benefits of farmer collectivization. Jennifer Tumwebaze, Kabale District Senior Fisheries Officer, pointed out that groups facilitate knowledge sharing, problem-solving, and ultimately, an improvement in the quality and competitiveness of produce. “Groups help farmers share experiences, learn from each other, tackle common problems and improve the quality and competitiveness of their produce,” Tumwebaze stated.

Furthermore, Bedda Mwebesa, Kabale District Production Officer, underscored that government agricultural support, including training, extension services, and access to improved farm inputs, is most effectively delivered through organized farmer groups and cooperatives. “Working in groups makes it easier for government to offer training, extension services, improved inputs and other interventions aimed at transforming agriculture,” she explained.

The district leadership also pledged continued support for such initiatives, with District Secretary for Production, Moses Bikogwamuhangi, promising ongoing efforts to organize agricultural exhibitions. He also presented a Plant Clinic tent and other equipment to boost agricultural extension services, which will help farmers with timely diagnosis and management of crop diseases.

The exhibition concluded with a renewed commitment from farmers and officials to foster cooperation, embrace climate-smart agriculture, and champion innovation and value addition as key strategies for sustainable agricultural development and improved household incomes in Kabale District.
