Chaos erupted in Mubende Municipality early Friday morning when a Kiri Bottling Company truck, overloaded with soft drinks, lost control and crashed into the popular Bamboo Restaurant. The incident, which occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Lubaanga Road, left a trail of destruction and thankfully, no fatalities.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the fully loaded truck speeding before the driver appeared to lose control, issuing a desperate warning to bystanders to “move away” before he leaped from the cabin. The vehicle subsequently plowed into the restaurant, narrowly missing staff and patrons.
A boda boda rider, identified by the motorcycle registration UEN 697W, was struck by the out-of-control truck as he attempted to cross the road. He sustained head injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The impact caused extensive damage to Bamboo Restaurant, with a section of the building collapsing and furniture, including tables and chairs, being destroyed. The full extent of the financial losses is still being assessed.
Restaurant staff described the terrifying moments. “I am really shocked because I saw the truck coming towards us as people were shouting,” said Eric Wamala, an attendant. “It eventually crashed into the restaurant.” Despite the devastation, Wamala expressed relief that no one on the restaurant’s premises was injured.
Traffic police have arrived at the scene to investigate the cause of the accident. No official statement has been released as of this report.
