Bugisu Leaders Form Committee for Imbalu Inauguration Amid Cultural Dispute

Leaders in the Bugisu region have agreed to a temporary measure for this year’s Imbalu inauguration, appointing a committee of district leaders to preside over the significant cultural ceremony. This decision comes as an attempt to quell rising tensions related to the legitimacy of the current cultural leadership of the Bamasaba.

The resolution was forged during a crucial consultative meeting involving national and local stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Bugisu Members of Parliament, district officials, and cultural figures. The state, represented by Minister Henry Tumukunde, is actively seeking to prevent any escalation of conflict during the traditional August 1st event.

Traditionally, the Umukuka, the paramount cultural leader, guides the Imbalu inauguration. However, recent disputes concerning the standing of Umukuka Jude Mike Mudoma have created division. The Bugisu Parliamentary Group proposed the district committee oversight as a way to navigate the immediate ceremony while acknowledging that the core leadership dispute remains unresolved.

“The question of who should lead the cultural institution remains an issue for the Bamasaba community to resolve,” stated Godfrey Wakooli Matembu, chairperson of the Bugisu Parliamentary Group, emphasizing that this arrangement is for facilitation only. He urged the community to avoid inflammatory rhetoric.

In addition to the inauguration plan, the government has scheduled mediation talks for June 21st to address the underlying cultural leadership conflict. Minister Tumukunde assured government support, including security, for a peaceful Imbalu celebration and committed to continued engagement to find a lasting solution for the Bugisu cultural institution. The Imbalu inauguration traditionally marks the commencement of the circumcision season for the Bamasaba and is a major cultural event.
