Bobi Wine Celebrates Kivumbi's Bail, Commends Judicial Independence

Robert Kyagulanyi, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has welcomed the release of Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, the party’s deputy president for the Buganda region, on bail. Kivumbi had been detained for 169 days on charges related to terrorism.

Kyagulanyi stated that Kivumbi’s temporary freedom was a significant relief after his prolonged detention without trial. He specifically commended the judicial officers who granted the bail, acknowledging their dedication to their constitutional duties even when faced with what he termed as intimidation.

“It is always a great delight to see that even in the midst of so much rot, there are still judicial officers who will rise above the pervasive intimidation and live to their oath,” Kyagulanyi remarked in a statement.

The NUP president maintained Kivumbi’s innocence, asserting that the individuals responsible for the violence and alleged murders in Butambala District following the January 2026 elections should be facing justice. He accused security agencies of failing to apprehend the actual perpetrators.

Kivumbi, a former Member of Parliament for Butambala County, was arrested in January. He and his co-accused were charged with terrorism, with the prosecution alleging their involvement in attacks on a police station and an electoral commission tally centre, leading to property destruction and fatalities.

Kivumbi and his co-accused have pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court granted bail to Kivumbi and 16 others, though conditions for their release are yet to be fully detailed. Six co-accused remain in custody.
