Uganda is accelerating the repatriation of its nationals from South Africa as violent anti-immigrant sentiment sweeps across the nation. The move comes after at least three Ugandans lost their lives in the escalating unrest.

Hon. Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, informed Parliament that as of July 7, 2026, a total of 880 Ugandans had been evacuated. An additional 250 were anticipated to arrive at Entebbe International Airport on Wednesday evening.

The minister stated that diplomatic channels are actively being utilized to ensure the safety and well-being of Ugandan citizens in South Africa. He highlighted ongoing engagement with Pretoria authorities, who have provided assurances regarding the protection of legal residents and committed to investigating incidents of violence.

Minister Kasolo advised Ugandans in South Africa to remain vigilant, steer clear of areas experiencing unrest, and maintain consistent communication with the Ugandan High Commission. However, questions were raised about the safety of future travel to South Africa, with the Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Joan Alobo, urging the government to provide clear guidance.

Hon. Alobo also advocated for government compensation for repatriated Ugandans who have suffered financial losses and abandoned businesses. She questioned the decision to house evacuees at the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi, to which Minister Kasolo explained it was a temporary measure for debriefing and rehabilitation due to the trauma experienced.

While the minister suggested that ongoing attacks primarily target undocumented immigrants, some MPs, like Hon. John Musila, countered that legally documented Ugandans and investors, including those running significant businesses and employing local South Africans, have also been affected and urged further investigation.
