Uganda Govt Confirms 16 Deaths in Karamoja Amidst Food Crisis, Launches Relief Efforts

The government of Uganda has officially confirmed sixteen deaths in the Karamoja sub-region, citing cause as food shortages exacerbated by extended dry conditions. This drought has led to significant crop failure, intensifying food insecurity in the area.

In a statement released on Wednesday, July 9, 2026, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), Alex Kakooza, highlighted that while other parts of the country are experiencing dry spells, Karamoja has been disproportionately impacted.

The OPM has already begun emergency distribution, with a consignment of 22 metric tons of relief food, including maize flour and beans, delivered to Kaabong District. This initial aid was distributed to the Loduku and Loyoru sub-counties.

Further aid is being arranged for immediate delivery to five districts identified as requiring urgent humanitarian assistance: Kaabong, Kotido, Amudat, Napak, and Moroto. The government is also planning a larger, comprehensive intervention for the entire Karamoja region and surrounding districts.

Plans are underway to seek cabinet approval for procuring additional emergency food relief. The government acknowledged the severe difficulties faced by communities experiencing food shortages and is prioritizing support for the most vulnerable populations.

Karamoja has historically been one of Uganda’s most food-insecure regions, grappling with recurrent droughts, inconsistent rainfall, low agricultural productivity, and climate-related shocks. Humanitarian organizations have consistently warned of the ongoing threats posed by dry spells to livelihoods dependent on rain-fed agriculture and livestock.

This latest government response aims to avert further loss of life and mitigate the escalating consequences of the drought on vulnerable communities.
