UCC Engaged in Talks to Resolve Nation Media Group Outlet Disruptions

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has assured the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) that discussions are underway to resolve the recent disruptions affecting Nation Media Group Uganda (NMG-U) outlets. Executive Director Nyombi Thembo confirmed that the UCC is actively engaged in consultations with relevant government stakeholders and NMG itself.

The NAB had lodged a formal complaint, urging the UCC to intervene in the shutdown of NMG’s operations, which impacted NTV Uganda, Spark TV, Dembe FM, KFM, Daily Monitor, and The EastAfrican. NAB argued that the closures appeared to bypass the established regulatory framework outlined in the Uganda Communications Act, 2013.

In a letter dated July 2, UCC’s Nyombi Thembo stated, “consultations are ongoing among the relevant government stakeholders with a view to resolving issues related to the disruption of broadcasting services at the Nation Media Group outlets.” The commission has promised to provide updates once these consultations are finalized.

The broadcasting sector’s concerns extend beyond procedural issues, highlighting fears that the continued closure could negatively impact hundreds of media workers and damage Uganda’s investment climate and international standing.

The security operation on June 28 led to the blocking of NMG premises, halting television and radio broadcasts and interrupting newspaper production, significantly affecting multiple media platforms.

The UCC has referenced a statement from the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Justine Kasule Lumumba, indicating that the disruptions stemmed from a security-led inquiry initiated by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The commission has expressed appreciation for NAB’s patience during this ongoing engagement process.
