New MPs Face Deadline for Wealth Declaration to IGG

Newly sworn-in Members of Parliament have been given a deadline to declare their income, assets, and liabilities to the Inspectorate of Government (IGG). The directive comes from the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige, who emphasized the legal requirements under the Leadership Code Act.

According to the Leadership Code Act, Cap 33 (2002), all designated “leaders” must declare their wealth within three months of assuming office. Subsequent declarations are required every two years, specifically in March.

Mwesige clarified that all Members of Parliament fall under the definition of “leaders” as stipulated in the Act. This means that even those who were not previously in leadership roles are now bound by these regulations.

The current directive specifically targets MPs who were not in leadership positions before and thus did not submit declarations in the previous cycle, which would have been in 2025. The exercise is crucial for updating the IGG’s comprehensive database.

Failure to comply with these declaration requirements can lead to penalties as prescribed by Section 63 of the Leadership Code Act. The memo, dated July 9, 2026, was also copied to the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, underscoring the importance of the directive.
