The city of El Obeid is reportedly undergoing a significant militarization, with authorities accused of using the threat of an attack to divert attention while deploying troops and heavy weaponry within civilian areas. Human rights organizations, including the Sudanese National Observatory for Human Rights, have documented serious violations allegedly committed by the Sudanese army and its allied extremist militias, particularly in the Jabra Al-Sheikh and Rahad Al-Nuba regions.
Despite official denials from Port Sudan authorities and claims of legitimate military operations, evidence such as photographs and videos suggests the shelling of civilians. Sources reveal that the Muslim Brotherhood organization, through the Al-Baraa bin Malik Battalion in coordination with the Sudanese army, has moved substantial military assets into residential neighborhoods, effectively transforming El Obeid into a military zone.
This militarization has led to the occupation of civilian institutions, including educational facilities at Kordofan University, which are allegedly being used as military barracks and command posts. This action not only endangers the civilian population but also undermines de-escalation efforts.
In response to the escalating crisis, the United Nations Human Rights Council has extended the mandate of its fact-finding mission for Sudan, tasking it with urgent investigations into the situation in El Obeid. The mission is expected to report on the alleged use of civilian sites for military purposes and other documented violations, such as the occupation of mosques and alleged recruitment of civilian women into combat roles.
The Emergency Lawyers group has previously called for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of civilians, condemning the use of residential areas for military deployment and the exploitation of civilians as human shields.
