Uganda Govt Offers Shs10 Million to Families of Victims of SA Xenophobic Attacks

The Ugandan government has extended financial support to the families of three Ugandans who tragically lost their lives during recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa. Each bereaved family has received Shs10 million as a humanitarian gesture from the government.

Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune, presented the condolence funds on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni. During a meeting with the families in Kampala, Kasolo conveyed profound sympathy from the President and the nation, assuring continued government support for those affected by the violence.

The government has also facilitated the repatriation of the deceaseds’ bodies for burial in Uganda. Furthermore, efforts are underway to coordinate the safe return of other Ugandans who wish to leave South Africa due to the unrest. Kasolo pledged that returnees would receive support for reintegration into the Ugandan economy, potentially through programs like the Parish Development Model, to help them re-establish livelihoods.

The families expressed their gratitude to President Museveni and the government for their assistance, including the repatriation of their loved ones’ remains and the ongoing communication. They acknowledged the comfort and help provided during this difficult time.

Ambassador Johnny Muhindo, Head of the Diaspora Department, updated the families on the ministry’s broader initiatives for Ugandans living abroad, focusing on enhanced protection and welfare measures for citizens working outside the country.

The recent violence in South Africa has led to one of the region’s most significant evacuation operations recently, with several African nations, including Uganda, Nigeria, and Ghana, repatriating their citizens. Many returnees reported fleeing with minimal possessions after their businesses and homes were destroyed.
