Gen. Muhoozi Meets New US Chargé d'Affaires for Defense Cooperation Talks

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, recently held discussions with Mikael (Mika) Cleverley, the newly appointed United States Chargé d’Affaires to Uganda. The meeting, which took place in Fort Portal, aimed to bolster defense cooperation and strengthen the overall bilateral relationship between Uganda and the United States.

This engagement marks Cleverley’s initial official interaction with Uganda’s military leadership since commencing his tenure last month. The discussions centered on areas of shared interest, with both representatives reiterating their dedication to fostering and expanding the existing cooperation between their nations.

Gen. Kainerugaba welcomed the US envoy, acknowledging the sustained partnership from Washington, particularly in military training, counter-terrorism efforts, health initiatives, and maintaining regional security. He also noted the positive impact of American-supported programs in sectors like education, agriculture, and infrastructure development on the Ugandan populace.

However, Gen. Kainerugaba also voiced concerns regarding the ongoing US travel advisories, suggesting they have negatively impacted Uganda’s vital tourism sector. He emphasized the significant contribution of tourism to the nation’s economy and employment.

Cleverley expressed his gratitude for the meeting and affirmed the US’s commitment to deepening its collaboration with Uganda. He stated his eagerness to work closely with Ugandan counterparts to further enhance the strong foundation of their existing partnership.

The meeting was attended by other high-ranking Ugandan military officials, including Lt. Gen. Kayanja Muhanga, Commander Land Forces, and Maj. Gen. Richard Otto, Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security. The long-standing security cooperation between Uganda and the United States encompasses joint efforts in counter-terrorism, peacekeeping operations, and regional security initiatives, particularly in combating extremist groups.
