The Ugandan Cabinet has officially sanctioned the appointment of new members to the Governing Board of the National Building Review Board (NBRB). The decision was made during the Cabinet’s second meeting of 2026, held at State House, Entebbe.

These appointments are in line with the Building Control Act, which empowers the NBRB to regulate and coordinate building activities nationwide. The new board’s primary mandate will be to bolster adherence to building regulations and elevate safety standards across Uganda’s construction industry.

Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Justine Kasule Lumumba, highlighted that the board’s crucial role involves ensuring that building constructions comply with established safety protocols and approved requirements.

Eng. Andrew Kitaka has been appointed as the Chairperson of the eight-member board. The appointed members bring a wealth of expertise from diverse professional fields, including engineering, architecture, surveying, and planning.

The full list of appointees includes Eng. Andrew Kitaka (Chairperson), RSU Irene Kitara, Arch. Henry Kigundu, PP Irene Achola, Benon Yiga, Eng. Chris Opuch, Richard Adrole, and Eng. Betty Nabbosa.

The NBRB is tasked with a range of responsibilities, from monitoring construction projects and ensuring compliance with approved plans to reviewing building control procedures and investigating incidents of building failure.

This move by the government signals an intensified effort to combat substandard construction practices and strengthen regulatory frameworks within the building sector, addressing increasing concerns about public safety, especially in urban centers.
