Buganda Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged the kingdom’s youth to embrace leadership roles and strive for self-reliance, asserting that effective governance at the local level is paramount for community development and the prosperity of the younger generation.
Mayiga articulated these views during a meeting at Bulange, Mengo, with representatives from two youth organizations within the royal clan: the Kayondo Hope Foundation and the Olulyo Olulangira Youth Network. These groups had convened to apprise the Katikkiro of their ongoing initiatives, successes, and the hurdles they face.
Prince Henry Kayondo, the Executive Director of the Kayondo Hope Foundation, highlighted the organization’s establishment of a savings and credit cooperative (SACCO) over the past four years. This initiative aims to foster a culture of saving among its members.
Kenneth Tebandeke, chairperson of the Olulyo Olulangira Youth Network, appealed to the Buganda Kingdom to consider members of the royal clan for available employment opportunities, citing unemployment as a significant challenge for the youth within the clan.
Prime Minister Mayiga lauded the two organizations for their efforts in enhancing members’ livelihoods through their respective projects. He encouraged the youth to actively pursue leadership positions, starting within their own clans, as this engagement cultivates the qualities necessary for future national leadership.
“Where there is no leadership, society is doomed,” Mayiga stated, underscoring the vital importance of youth involvement in leadership, particularly at the clan level. He also advised the young princes and princesses to focus on hard work and planning during their youth to secure their future and to uphold the dignity and values associated with the royal family.
