UCC Cracks Down on Unlicensed Public Wi-Fi Providers Across Uganda

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has announced a sweeping enforcement campaign targeting unlicensed operators providing public Wi-Fi services throughout the country. This initiative comes as the demand for accessible and affordable internet connectivity continues to surge across Uganda.

Investigations by the UCC have revealed a growing number of operators installing telecommunications equipment to offer public internet access without the necessary approvals. The commission emphasizes that such operations not only violate the current regulatory framework but also pose significant risks to consumers and compromise the integrity of Uganda’s communication infrastructure.

According to the UCC, licensing internet service providers is crucial for ensuring adherence to quality standards, consumer protection, and robust cybersecurity measures. Unlicensed services can lead to unreliable connectivity, potential exposure of personal data, and increased vulnerability to cyber threats, with limited recourse for users facing issues.

The enforcement campaign will be conducted in collaboration with licensed Internet Service Providers, telecommunication companies, and relevant government bodies. The UCC’s goal is to ensure all public internet service providers operate under strict standards of accountability and reliability, thereby fostering greater trust in Uganda’s digital ecosystem.

Individuals and businesses currently providing unauthorized public Wi-Fi services have been urged to either regularize their operations by obtaining the necessary licenses or to discontinue their services immediately. The public is advised to exclusively seek internet services from licensed providers or their authorized agents and can verify legitimacy through the UCC’s official list.

Consumers who encounter unauthorized Wi-Fi services are encouraged to report them to the UCC via their toll-free number, 0800 222 777. This campaign is part of broader efforts to cultivate a secure, innovative, and affordable communications environment as Uganda progresses with its digital transformation agenda.
