UCC Cracks Down on Unlicensed Public Wi-Fi Operators Across Uganda

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has launched a significant enforcement drive targeting unlicensed operators of public Wi-Fi networks across Uganda. This campaign, announced recently, comes as the demand for accessible and affordable internet connectivity surges throughout the nation.

The UCC highlighted that while the expanding internet landscape offers new business avenues, all providers of public internet services must adhere to national laws and regulatory frameworks. Investigations have revealed individuals and businesses installing telecommunications equipment to offer Wi-Fi without obtaining the necessary approvals.

According to the commission, these unauthorized operations not only contravene regulations but also pose risks to consumers, including potential data exposure and cyber threats. Furthermore, they can compromise the security and reliability of Uganda’s communication infrastructure.

The UCC emphasized that licensing internet service providers ensures compliance with quality standards, consumer protection mandates, and cybersecurity measures. Users connecting to illegal Wi-Fi hotspots may face unreliable services, limited avenues for complaint resolution, and increased vulnerability to online threats.

In collaboration with licensed Internet Service Providers, telecom operators, and relevant government bodies, the UCC aims to ensure all public internet services meet established standards for accountability and consumer protection. This initiative seeks to foster greater trust in Uganda’s digital ecosystem.

The regulator strongly advises individuals and businesses offering unauthorized services to regularize their operations immediately or discontinue them. The public is urged to verify that they are using services from licensed providers or their authorized agents, with UCC providing a list of legitimate providers on its official channels. Consumers encountering non-compliant services can report them via the UCC’s toll-free line.

This enforcement action is part of UCC’s broader strategy to cultivate a secure, innovative, and affordable communication environment, supporting Uganda’s digital transformation goals.
