Nations participating in the latest NATO summit are navigating a complex landscape, with President Donald Trump’s skepticism towards the alliance casting a long shadow over discussions. Trump’s attendance in Ankara was reportedly facilitated by his close relationship with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who extended a personal welcome including a ceremonial reception.
Despite the optics of unity, Trump’s presence has been marked by disruptive statements. His remarks about potentially acquiring Greenland, a territory of NATO member Denmark, and his frustration that allies did not support his military actions against Iran, have underscored his transactional view of security alliances. This comes as European nations are increasingly focused on self-sufficiency in defense, particularly in the face of potential shifts in US foreign policy.
The summit, however, has also been a platform for substantive progress in rearming Europe.
