Andrew Mukasa, popularly known as Abitex, has expressed his disappointment following the financial outcome of the recent Comedy Festival held at the UMA Show Grounds. The veteran events promoter revealed that his substantial investment of over UGX 220 million yielded only about UGX 150 million in revenue, resulting in a net loss of approximately UGX 70 million.
Abitex stated that while his intention was to honor and uplift Uganda’s comedy scene, the festival did not meet his financial expectations. He attributed the shortfall to a limited pool of comedians capable of drawing paying audiences.
“We have fewer than ten comedians who can attract crowds,” Abitex explained during a radio interview. “People like Mariachi, Amooti, Maulana, and Reign are among them.” He further elaborated that even comedians who received smaller payments of around UGX 500,000 were unable to generate comparable revenue when featured prominently.
Despite his established reputation as a leading entertainment organizer, Abitex emphasized that his current focus is shifting towards ensuring profitability in his ventures rather than solely maintaining his public image.
These revelations have sparked a renewed discussion regarding the economic sustainability of the Ugandan comedy industry and the challenges promoters face in organizing large-scale comedy events that consistently generate positive returns.
