Douglas Lwanga, a long-time figure in Uganda’s media landscape, is shining a spotlight on the financial rewards within the nation’s creative sector. Lwanga, with nearly 15 years of experience in entertainment, asserts that professional DJs can command incomes that significantly outperform many traditional corporate roles.

He points to his own venture, Purple Skills Klinic in Kampala, as a testament to his belief in nurturing creative talent. The clinic aims to equip young Ugandans with practical, marketable skills, particularly in the arts.

According to Lwanga, a skilled DJ can earn as much as UGX 1 million for a mere two-hour performance. If a DJ manages to secure three such gigs in a single night, their earnings can far exceed a typical monthly salary for many office-going professionals. “Tell me, which corporate job pays that much?” he posed, emphasizing the substantial earning potential.

These insights come at a time when many young Ugandans are considering their career trajectories. Lwanga’s message challenges the conventional wisdom that favors white-collar jobs, advocating instead for the viability and profitability of creative professions. Through Purple Skills Klinic, he is actively working to empower the youth to transform their artistic talents into sustainable livelihoods.
