The National Resistance Movement (NRM) is gearing up for a fiercely contested internal selection process as 43 party members have submitted expressions of interest for the two available seats representing Uganda in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
This surge in applications signifies a strong desire among NRM members to engage in regional legislative and diplomatic affairs. The sheer number of contenders means that more than 20 individuals are vying for each of the two coveted positions.
Tanga Odoi, the NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, confirmed the numbers, interpreting the high turnout as a testament to the party’s popularity and the enthusiasm of its members for regional representation. He noted that the initial figure of 38 applicants was extended after a deadline adjustment allowed five more hopefuls to join the race.
The fate of these 43 aspirants now rests with the NRM’s Central Executive Committee (CEC). This powerful party organ is tasked with deciding the next steps, which could include shortlisting candidates, conducting interviews, or forwarding all names to the NRM parliamentary caucus for a final vote.
“The Central Executive Committee will guide us on the way forward,” Odoi stated. “Whether they pick two candidates, interact with the aspirants, or forward all the names to the caucus for election, we shall follow their guidance.”
The EALA positions are highly sought after due to the influence they offer in matters of East African integration, trade policy, and regional diplomacy. The outcome of this internal selection will feed directly into Uganda’s broader process of electing representatives to the Arusha-based assembly.
All aspirants have been urged to exercise patience as the CEC deliberates on the selection methodology, ensuring a transparent and guided process to narrow down the field of 43 contenders to just two nominees. The resolution is anticipated to be a significant event within the party’s internal politics.
