The Iteso Cultural Union (ICU) has formally appealed to President Yoweri Museveni for a direct dialogue regarding the current legal and political challenges faced by former Speaker of Parliament, Annet Anita Among. The call comes after a visit by the Emorimor, Paul Sande Emolot, the paramount chief of the Iteso, to Ms. Among at her Nakasero residence.

Ms. Among, a prominent figure from the Teso sub-region, is reportedly the subject of intensive state investigations into allegations of corruption and abuse of office. In a statement conveyed through his Prime Minister, Emorimor Emolot urged the state to handle the situation with utmost sensitivity. He specifically requested that considerations be made for Ms. Among’s health and well-being throughout the investigative process.

The cultural leader further implored state agencies to expedite these investigations, aiming for a swift, just, and conclusive outcome. “We urge that the process remains transparent, fair, and strictly guided by the principles of justice and the rule of law,” stated Mr. Emolot, highlighting a commitment to due process.

Furthermore, the Emorimor pleaded for leniency regarding Ms. Among’s current confinement. “Where circumstances permit and in accordance with the law, consideration should be given to measures that allow our daughter greater freedom and dignity as she awaits the conclusion of the ongoing process,” he added.

Despite the serious nature of the corruption probe, Emorimor Emolot expressed his gratitude to President Museveni for allowing the cultural leadership to visit Ms. Among. He viewed this access as a positive indication of the government’s adherence to principles of fairness. The intervention by the ICU underscores the significant political and cultural dimensions accompanying Ms. Among’s legal troubles, as leaders from the Teso community rally in support of one of their most high-profile political figures.
