The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has inaugurated the Ruhengyere Army Primary School, located in Kayonza Parish, Kikatsi Sub-county, Kiruhura District. This development is part of the UPDF’s ongoing commitment to improving the provision of quality education for the families of its personnel and the communities situated near military installations.
The new school is one of 53 educational facilities established under the UPDF’s Special Forces Command (SFC), designed to bring vital services closer to those living and working around army bases.
Brig. Gen. Richard Karemire, the Joint Staff for Formal Education, Sports and Culture at UPDF, presided over the commissioning. He expressed gratitude to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his unwavering support of welfare initiatives, particularly those focusing on education for soldiers and their dependents.
Karemire noted that the current civilian student majority at Ruhengyere Army Primary School is welcomed, emphasizing that educating Ugandans is a shared goal. The UPDF intends to continue collaborating with the Ministry of Education and Sports to further enhance learning environments in schools founded by the military.
The school, initially established in 2022 and operating from temporary structures, was taken over by the UPDF Directorate of Formal Education in 2023. Following directives from the Chief of Joint Staff, the SFC oversaw the construction of the current facilities, which include multiple classroom blocks and an administration block. The school has already shown academic promise, with students achieving commendable results in the Primary Leaving Examinations and building towards future success.
This commissioning underscores the UPDF’s dedication to addressing challenges such as infrastructure and resource provision in its educational institutions.
