The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has stated it is preparing to release an official communication concerning the recent shutdown of several Nation Media Group (NMG) publications and broadcast channels.

Reports indicate that Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, and Spark TV ceased operations early Sunday morning after military personnel were deployed to NMG’s offices. The regulatory body, through its spokesperson Ibrahim Bbosa, has acknowledged that a statement is forthcoming but declined to offer immediate details on the UCC’s stance or the specific reasons behind the action.

This development has raised concerns, as regulatory actions typically involve formal notices and justifications for sanctions against media houses. The involvement of military forces, rather than a standard regulatory procedure, has prompted questions about the legal basis of the shutdown.

The action appears to stem from remarks made by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who indicated he had presidential approval to close the outlets. These threats were reportedly made after NMG platforms covered sensitive issues, including the arrest of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has strongly condemned the shutdown, emphasizing its concern for the media landscape and constitutional rights. NAB is actively seeking clarification from relevant authorities, including the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, UCC, and the Chief of Defence Forces, to understand the circumstances and work towards a resolution. The Institute for Justice and Accountability Uganda (IJAU) has also denounced the military presence, labeling it an infringement on press freedom.
