The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) is intensifying its outreach to Uganda’s informal sector with the SmartLife Flexi campaign, bringing retirement savings solutions directly to communities.

This initiative targets a wide range of self-employed individuals, including boda boda riders, farmers, traders, artisans, and salon operators. The SmartLife Flexi scheme is specifically designed to accommodate the fluctuating incomes common in the informal economy, allowing members to contribute whenever they can, rather than adhering to fixed monthly payments.

NSSF teams have been actively engaging communities across various districts, holding events and partnering with local organizations such as SACCOs and cooperatives. These engagements aim to simplify the registration process and provide accessible information about retirement planning.

Dennis Marsha Kabuuka, NSSF Manager for Livelihood, emphasized that the campaign is a crucial part of the Fund’s commitment to ensuring financial security for all Ugandans. “Through SmartLife Flexi, we are taking social security closer to communities that have traditionally had limited access to retirement savings,” Kabuuka stated.

The campaign also focuses on financial literacy, equipping participants with skills in consistent saving, financial management, and future planning. It seeks to dispel the notion that retirement planning is exclusive to those in formal employment.

By reaching out to the informal sector, which represents a significant portion of Uganda’s workforce, NSSF aims to enhance financial inclusion, foster a savings culture, and bolster household financial resilience across the nation. The message is clear: every Ugandan can start building a secure future by saving today.
