Tragedy struck in Masaka district when the Officer in Charge of Kyesiiga police post, Willy Ogwal, allegedly opened fire, resulting in the death of a two-year-old child and injuries to two other civilians. The incident unfolded at Ndeeba trading centre in Lwaggulwe parish.

Reports indicate that Ogwal was called to the scene to address a brawl among bar patrons, which had reportedly erupted over the alleged theft of a mobile phone.

During the confrontation, the officer is said to have discharged his firearm. The bullets tragically claimed the life of two-year-old Ashiraf Kiweewa. The child’s mother, Aisha Kisakyamukama, and another individual, Gerald Kiweewa, sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention at Kyanamukaka Health Centre IV.

Following the incident, officers from Masaka Central police station apprehended Ogwal. He is being held at Kyanamukaka Police Station as investigations into the shooting commence.

Greater Masaka regional police spokesperson, Twaha Kasirye, confirmed the arrest and stated that detectives are actively working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting. “We just want to understand what really transpired at the scene, whether it is murder or whether it was in self-defence. We have already recorded statements from some eyewitnesses,” Kasirye noted.

Police investigations into the fatal shooting are ongoing.
