Gen. Muhoozi Orders Closure of NTV, Spark TV, and Daily Monitor

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has directed the closure of prominent media outlets NTV Uganda, Spark TV, and the Daily Monitor. The shutdown reportedly began in the early hours of Sunday following a security operation at the Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda offices in Kampala.
Gen. Muhoozi, son of President Yoweri Museveni, announced the decision on the social media platform X, stating that his father had “approved” the plan. He indicated that the crackdown was a response to what he termed “bad stories” concerning Uganda’s top leadership. Muhoozi further declared that his office would now be responsible for clearing any negative reporting about the country, explicitly stating, “In Uganda, I do not believe in a free press! The press should be guided by cadres of the revolution.”
The CDF asserted that the affected media houses would remain off-air until they received his explicit approval to resume operations. Nation Media Group Uganda, the parent company, also operates The EastAfrican and Dembe FM, among other platforms.
This incident evokes memories of a 2013 raid on the Daily Monitor offices, which occurred after the publication of a letter alleging a plot to position Muhoozi as President Museveni’s successor, a controversy known as the “Muhoozi Project.” At that time, the government denied the allegations, and the police cited investigations into leaked documents, though media rights groups widely condemned the action as an infringement on press freedom.
