Encroachment on Kampala's Wetlands: A Growing Crisis

Kampala’s vital wetlands, critical for drainage and environmental health, are facing severe encroachment, with numerous houses now occupying areas previously designated as protected zones.

The situation is particularly concerning in areas like Lubigi and wetlands near Kawuku, where residential structures have been erected and occupied despite their sensitive ecological status. This raises significant questions about land acquisition processes and the effectiveness of environmental regulatory bodies.

Critics point to the apparent lack of intervention from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), the government agency responsible for overseeing environmental protection in Uganda. The presence of established homes within these wetlands suggests a failure in monitoring and enforcement mechanisms, allowing illegal construction to persist.

Wetlands play a crucial role in urban environments by absorbing excess rainwater, thus mitigating flooding. Their degradation can lead to increased incidences of waterlogging, damage to infrastructure, and potential health hazards.
