Parents and guardians in Kamuli District facing the daily challenges of caring for children with disabilities now have a source of hope with the inauguration of a new specialized daycare rehabilitation center. Located at Bulange Parents School in Namwendwa Sub-county, the facility was established by Katalemwa Cheshire Home and handed over to the community to foster inclusive education and localized support.

For many families, particularly mothers who often have to forgo employment to care for children with severe disabilities, the center represents a vital lifeline. The dedication required for caregiving can lead to significant economic hardship, limiting opportunities for parents to earn a living.

Dr. John Kiyaga Nsubuga, a board member with Katalemwa Cheshire Home, stated that the initiative was born out of a recognition of the pressing economic and social vulnerabilities experienced by these families. The daycare center is intended to provide parents with the necessary time to engage in economic activities while ensuring their children receive safe, quality care in a supportive setting, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life for the children.

Wilfred Wambuga, Kamuli District Education Officer for Special Needs Education, hailed the project as a significant achievement in community empowerment and inclusion. He emphasized that the center is a symbol of hope, assuring children with disabilities that they deserve equal opportunities.

Despite this progress, Wambuga pointed out significant systemic shortages within the district’s education sector, including a lack of sign language interpreters, specialized teachers, and physiotherapists. He made an urgent appeal to the government and other partners for increased provision of trained personnel.

Katalemwa Cheshire Home has a track record of supporting over 1,000 children in Kamuli through various interventions, including assistive devices, rehabilitation, and financial aid.
