Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago is currently receiving medical care at Mulago National Referral Hospital due to a deteriorating health condition. His legal representatives have indicated that while the Mulago medical team is providing care, further specialized treatment, potentially in India, is being considered. This option, however, is contingent on his release on bail.
Lukwago’s lawyer, Medard Lubega Sseggona, reported that Mr. Lukwago is experiencing significant pain, particularly in an area where he had previously undergone surgery in India. Sseggona described his client as being in a challenging situation, being both a patient and a detainee, which complicates access to necessary medical attention.
The politician was transferred to Mulago from Luzira Prison on June 25, 2026, following a court order. He faces charges of misprision of treason, accused of having prior knowledge of a plot to overthrow the government and failing to report it. Lukwago denies these charges.
The court had previously denied him bail, but the magistrate ordered that he receive comprehensive medical assessment and treatment at the referral hospital, with his wife and a chosen lawyer granted access to medical reports. His health concerns reportedly include hypertension, gastritis, respiratory issues, and a spinal condition.
Meanwhile, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces, made remarks on social media regarding Lukwago’s detention. His comments, which included references to Lukwago’s physical appearance and potential actions based on requests from the Kabaka, have generated considerable public discussion. Lukwago is scheduled to appear in court again on June 30, 2026.
