Electoral Commission Commissioner Steven Tashobya has singled out Ntungamo District for its exceptional performance in the 2026 General Election, where President Museveni reportedly secured 94% of the presidential vote. Tashobya highlighted this significant outcome at a thanksgiving service held in Ntungamo to celebrate First Lady Janet Museveni’s 78th birthday and her recovery from illness.

“Ntungamo people, thank you for voting well,” Tashobya stated, acknowledging the district’s strong turnout for the incumbent. He noted that the district’s performance was among the best nationally, a crucial factor for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s overall success. Tashobya also extended gratitude to NRM mobilisers and structures within the district for their efforts in securing votes.

Tashobya, a former MP and NRM chairperson for Ntungamo before joining the EC, also addressed concerns about the election’s credibility. He defended the electoral process, stating that there were no outstanding petitions against the presidential election results. According to Tashobya, even a petition that was initially planned was withdrawn on the same day it was filed, suggesting a lack of widespread grievances.

This assertion contrasts with the views of opposition parties, such as the National Unity Platform (NUP), which have contested the fairness and transparency of the 2026 elections. NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) has maintained that the elections were fraudulent.

During the event, Tashobya also paid tribute to the First Lady, recounting his close observation of her contributions to Ntungamo’s development during her time as the Member of Parliament for Ruhaama County. The thanksgiving service, which celebrated Ms. Museveni’s birthday and recovery following treatment abroad, was led by religious leaders from the Anglican, Catholic, and Muslim faiths.

Speakers at the event, including District Chairperson Samuel Mucunguzi and former Ntungamo Woman MP Joseline Kamateneti Bata, credited Ms. Museveni with fostering advancements in education, infrastructure, and community unity within Ntungamo District.
