Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe of the North Kigezi Diocese has issued a strong warning to Christians, urging them to steer clear of immoral behaviors that are eroding family values. During a thanksgiving ceremony in Kabale District, the Bishop specifically targeted excessive alcohol consumption and adultery as key vices plaguing contemporary families.

He equated the popular local sorghum brew, known as ‘Enturire,’ to commercial alcoholic drinks like waragi and beer, both of which the Anglican Church strongly disapproves of. Bishop Asiimwe emphasized that drunkenness is an affront to biblical teachings and called for spiritual renewal among the faithful. He shared a personal anecdote about how alcohol influenced his past, linking it to poverty and moral decay, and urged attendees to repent and abandon such habits for salvation.

The discussion around ‘Enturire’ is not new in the Kigezi region. Previously, the diocesan synod had officially condemned the drink due to its rising consumption and pastoral challenges. Ironically, ‘Enturire’ has often been present at local church events, traditionally viewed as a mild social drink distinct from Western liquors.

During the same event, Ndorwa County West MP Eliab Naturinda Mporera called for greater inclusivity within the church, challenging religious leaders to end discrimination based on educational attainment. He acknowledged the contributions of individuals to community development, regardless of their formal schooling, and stressed that unity in faith should prevail over division.

The bishop’s sermon highlighted the long-standing conflict between embracing traditional practices and upholding religious and moral standards within the community.
