Ishongororo Health Centre IV, a vital healthcare facility in Ibanda District, is struggling under the weight of a significant water crisis and relentless patient congestion. The facility, which serves over 170 patients daily, experiences an unreliable water supply from the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), forcing it to depend on rainwater harvesting and a shallow well. This scarcity directly affects basic hygiene standards within the wards and the overall cleanliness of the center.
Dr. Wilson Birungi, the Officer-in-Charge, highlighted the disruptive impact of the water shortage. “Patients are now forced to buy a jerrycan of water for about Shs1,000, which is an extra burden on many of them,” he stated, underscoring the added financial strain on vulnerable individuals.
Compounding the water issue is the persistent congestion in the Outpatient Department (OPD). Dr. Birungi noted that patient numbers frequently exceed the facility’s designed capacity, leading to extended waiting times and increased pressure on the healthcare staff. “This has resulted in long waiting hours and increased pressure on our health workers,” he added.
Local authorities acknowledge these challenges. Dr. Julius Bamwine, the Ibanda District Health Officer, confirmed that discussions are underway with NWSC to find a sustainable water solution. He also addressed congestion, mentioning efforts to ensure staff punctuality and plans for increasing the workforce.
Happy Herbert Mayanja, Ibanda District LCV Chairperson, emphasized the health centre’s crucial role, serving not only northern Ibanda but also neighbouring districts. He called for increased investment to meet the growing demand. Given Ibanda’s lack of a full-fledged district hospital, local leaders are advocating for an upgrade of Ishongororo Health Centre IV to hospital status.
