The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has officially opened the Ruhengyere Army Primary School in Kiruhura District’s Kikatsi Sub-county. This facility is one of several educational institutions managed by the UPDF under the Special Forces Command (SFC), aimed at extending vital services closer to military personnel and their dependents, as well as the local populace.
The commissioning was led by Brig Gen. Richard Karemire, who highlighted the significant role of the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in prioritizing the welfare of soldiers and supporting educational initiatives.
Brig Gen. Karemire noted that the establishment of the school was made possible through substantial support from Gen. Kainerugaba, who consistently advocates for the well-being of soldiers and their families, with a particular focus on education. He also commended the SFC leadership for their dedication of resources to developing UPDF schools.
Currently, the UPDF operates 53 educational institutions. Ruhengyere Army Primary School is one of them, designed to offer quality education primarily to the children of soldiers, thereby allowing parents to focus on national security duties. Importantly, the school also welcomes pupils from neighboring communities, with civilian children now making up the majority of the student body.
The UPDF remains committed, in conjunction with the Ministry of Education and Sports, to improving the infrastructure, resources, and staffing within its founded schools. The school’s history dates back to 2022, initially operating under challenging conditions before the UPDF’s Directorate of Formal Education, Sports and Culture assumed management in 2023. Construction of the current facilities, including three classroom blocks and an administration block, was completed in early 2026.
Despite its recent establishment, the school has shown academic promise, with students achieving good results in last year’s Primary Leaving Examinations and high expectations for current candidates.
