Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Uganda are being strongly encouraged to embed ethical business practices and robust corporate governance into their operations. This call to action comes as industry experts highlight these principles as foundational for long-term survival, economic contribution, and sustainable growth within the Ugandan economy.

The 18th edition of the KPMG-Nation Media Group Uganda Top 100 Mid-Sized Companies Survey was recently launched in Kampala, serving as a platform for these discussions. Peter Kyambadde, head of tax and regulatory services at KPMG Uganda, underscored the vital role SMEs play in job creation and wealth generation, describing them as central to Uganda’s economic transformation.

Businesses that operate with a strong commitment to integrity, transparency, and accountability are better equipped to attract customers, secure essential financing, and build resilience against economic downturns. Ethical conduct, according to experts, is key to avoiding legal pitfalls, enhancing a company’s reputation, and fostering enduring relationships with clients and stakeholders.

Despite their economic importance, many SMEs face significant challenges, with a high rate of failure reported. Statistics indicate that a substantial percentage of Ugandan businesses cease operations within their first few years, often due to financial mismanagement, inadequate planning, and limited access to affordable credit.

Financial institutions are stepping up with various support mechanisms, including recovery funds and tailored financing options, to help businesses navigate economic difficulties. Entrepreneurs are advised to seek professional guidance and refine their financial management practices to bolster their enterprises.

The Top 100 Mid-Sized Companies initiative, now in its 18th year, continues to recognize and champion businesses that exhibit resilience and a strong potential for growth, celebrating their journey from modest beginnings to industry prominence. Supporting SMEs is seen as directly supporting the national economy, given their significant contribution to employment and livelihoods across the country.

This initiative showcases businesses that have started small and grown into major players, demonstrating the potential within Uganda’s SME sector. Supporting these enterprises is crucial, as they form the backbone of the Ugandan business landscape and are pivotal for widespread economic well-being.
