Health centers in Tororo, Uganda, served as a crucial hub for thousands seeking medical attention during a recent two-day outreach program. The initiative attracted residents from across eastern Uganda and parts of neighboring Kenya, highlighting the significant demand for accessible healthcare.

Organized by Caring Hands International Ministries and Medical Missions, the camp offered a wide array of services, including cancer screenings, dental care, eye examinations, HIV testing, and minor surgeries. More than 3,000 people received consultations and treatment, underscoring the difficulties many in the region face in obtaining necessary medical services due to cost, distance, or long waiting periods.

Beneficiaries, like Harriet Ajare and Amoit Murther, expressed gratitude for the access to treatment previously unavailable to them. The outreach’s broad reach, drawing people from Busoga, Bugisu, Teso, Sebei, Karamoja, and western Kenya, demonstrated its regional importance.

Frederick Angura, MP for Tororo South County, lauded the event as a timely intervention, addressing the persistent challenges in accessing specialized medical care and reducing preventable deaths. Professor Robert Karyeshubura, Country Director for Caring Hands Uganda, noted that while Tororo showed fewer severe cases of certain illnesses compared to other areas, there was a concerning prevalence of unmanaged hypertension.

Karyeshubura stressed the importance of regular check-ups and adherence to treatment. He also advocated for maintaining allowances for medical interns, recognizing their vital role in healthcare delivery. Volunteers, including Dr. Anaitwe Benon and lab technician Kimeza Andrew, described the experience as both challenging and rewarding, emphasizing the impact of such partnerships in extending healthcare to underserved communities.
