Savanna Uganda has made a significant move into the Ugandan telecommunications landscape by launching its own mobile network. Previously known for its Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) services, the company is now a fully integrated Mobile Network Operator (MNO), setting the stage for increased competition with established players MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda.
The new mobile service is initially available in Kampala and its surrounding areas. Savanna’s innovative approach combines its existing fiber internet offerings with mobile SIM cards. Existing fiber customers can add mobile services to their current plans for an additional fee, consolidating their fixed and mobile connectivity under a single billing account.
During the launch, Savanna Uganda CEO Alex Wanyoike highlighted the expansion as a key milestone for the company and Uganda’s digital economy. “We are proud to extend our robust fiber-driven customer model into mobile, delivering truly unlimited voice and data at an affordable incremental price,” Wanyoike stated. He emphasized that this integration offers a seamless and scalable connectivity experience, aiming to set a new benchmark for value and performance in the African telecom market.
This launch occurs at a time of substantial growth in Uganda’s digital sector. According to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the country has over 61.6 million mobile subscriptions and sees billions in mobile money transactions quarterly. Savanna’s entry, with its promise of “unlimited” voice and data, seeks to attract users, particularly in urban centers, who are looking for more affordable and high-speed internet and mobile data solutions.
Savanna plans to expand its mobile services to other regions of Uganda and eventually replicate its integrated connectivity model in other African markets, starting with South Africa. The company asserts that this expansion underscores its dedication to promoting digital inclusion by utilizing its fiber infrastructure to deliver more affordable and dependable communication services.
