President Yoweri Museveni has conveyed a message of solidarity and sympathy from Uganda to the people of Venezuela after devastating earthquakes struck the South American nation. The tremors have led to a significant loss of life, with hundreds confirmed dead and thousands injured, alongside extensive damage to property and infrastructure.

In his statement, President Museveni expressed that Uganda stands with Venezuela during this incredibly difficult time, which he described as one of the worst natural disasters in the country’s recent memory. He acknowledged the “colossal loss of life, multiple casualties and damage to property and infrastructure” caused by the major earthquakes.

The Ugandan leader relayed “heartfelt condolences to the Government and People of Venezuela,” emphasizing that the people of Uganda “commiserate and stand in solidarity, with their Venezuelan Brothers and Sisters.” He also wished for the “quick recuperation to those who sustained physical injuries” and expressed hope that ongoing search and rescue efforts would be successful in preventing further loss of life.

The earthquakes, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, are reportedly the most powerful to hit Venezuela in over a century. The coastal state of La Guaira has suffered the most severe destruction, with numerous buildings collapsing and affecting many families. The capital, Caracas, has also seen significant structural damage to residential buildings, prompting residents to seek shelter elsewhere due to fears of aftershocks.

President Museveni concluded by praying for the victims and their families, stating, “May the Almighty God grant eternal rest to the departed souls.”
