The stage is set for the 2026 Uganda Rugby Premiership final at Kings Park Arena, featuring Stanbic Black Pirates against Toyota Buffaloes. While finals are unpredictable, season statistics offer insights into where the championship may be won and lost. Pirates, with a formidable 13 wins from 15 matches, boast the league’s strongest record, marked by an impressive 83 tries scored and a stingy defense that conceded only 17. Buffaloes, though more variable with an 11-3-1 record, have proven adaptable, scoring 55 tries and allowing 24.
Team selection presents the first tactical hurdle. Buffaloes are awaiting the clearance of Aaron Tukei, a key finisher with seven tries this season. Their squad is also bolstered by the return of several Sevens players, including Daniel Otim, Ronald Ogwang, and Moses Watmon, adding crucial pace and physicality, particularly in collision situations. Pirates, conversely, face disruptions with the probable absence of captain Isaac Massa due to concussion and the loss of Sydney Gongodyo, a vital lineout target and ball carrier.
The aerial contest at the lineout will be critical. Pirates’ attack often originates from lineout possession, but without Gongodyo, responsibility shifts to Douglas Komakech, Frank Kidega, and Humphrey Tashobya. Their accuracy under pressure will be tested against Buffaloes’ established pairing of Joseph Teko and Victor Baguma.
Kicking strategy could also play a significant role. Buffaloes rely on Yasin Waiswa, who has accumulated 104 points this season with a 62% success rate. Pirates’ kicking game appears less settled, with William Nkore and Timothy Kisiga offering different strengths. Buffaloes aim to leverage Waiswa’s game management and a strong kick-chase to pressure Pirates’ defense.
The breakdown will be the engine of momentum. Pirates possess potent threats in forwards Alex Aturinda and Haruna Muhammad, who have been prolific try-scorers. Their ability to create and finish will need to be managed by Buffaloes’ defensive efforts. The duel between Buffaloes’ David Bajjananseko and Pirates’ Zziwa at the breakdown will dictate the pace of the game.
Notably, in their regular-season encounter, Pirates dominated the first half while Buffaloes controlled the second. While history may not repeat itself, Pirates have shown improved finishing in the playoffs, while Buffaloes enter with fresher legs and added depth. The final is set for Saturday at 4 pm at Kings Park Arena.
