Kayunga Deputy Resident District Commissioner, John Magezi, has stressed the importance of parents taking a proactive role in shaping their children’s character. Speaking at the Busaana Church of Uganda Primary School, Magezi urged parents to instill values of discipline, patriotism, and good morals, which he described as foundational for nurturing responsible citizens who will contribute positively to their communities and the nation.

This call came during the ceremony for pupils who had completed an intensive five-day patriotism training program. The initiative aimed to cultivate essential values such as discipline, leadership, national service, and civic responsibility among the young learners.

Magezi also encouraged educational institutions to prioritize co-curricular activities. He highlighted that sports, music, drama, and other extracurricular programs offer valuable opportunities for students to discover and develop their talents beyond academics, thereby enhancing their overall skill set and future prospects.

Furthermore, Magezi reminded parents of the fundamental role basic needs, particularly adequate nutrition, play in a child’s ability to learn effectively. He emphasized that ensuring children are well-fed is essential for their concentration and academic success.

However, challenges persist. Zowena Kaguna, the Headteacher of Busaana Church of Uganda Primary School, highlighted issues such as a significant teacher-student ratio imbalance, with approximately 1,500 pupils and only 21 teachers, some of whom are privately funded. This staffing gap strains the quality of education. Additionally, insufficient teacher accommodation further hampers service delivery.

Kaguna also brought attention to prevalent social challenges affecting student performance, including school dropouts, early and forced marriages, child labor, and harmful cultural practices, which disproportionately impact girls and disrupt their educational journeys.

She appealed for strengthened child protection measures and addressed the need for government and stakeholders to tackle staffing shortages and infrastructure deficits in rural schools, ensuring all children have equitable opportunities to achieve their potential.

The patriotism training program aligns with broader government efforts to promote discipline, national unity, and civic responsibility among students nationwide.
