Vendors in Kayunga District are anticipating a positive turn of events as a significant market reconstruction project approaches its final stages. The four-storey market stall building in Kayunga Town, a development aimed at offering a structured trading environment, is nearing completion.

The first phase, focusing on the ground floor, is slated for commissioning in August. This initial phase will prioritize vendors who were displaced during the recent nationwide enforcement against illegal structures, which impacted many traders across the country.

What initially seemed like a challenge for local traders has now been transformed into an opportunity thanks to the advocacy of Ntenjeru North Member of Parliament and State Minister for Finance, Amos Lugoloobi. He successfully secured Shs1.5 billion to fund the market project.

Wazibaz Construction Company, the contractor, has indicated that the ground floor alone represents an investment of approximately Shs500 million. The accelerated completion of this level is crucial to facilitate the prompt resumption of business for affected vendors.

During a recent project inspection, the Kayunga District Monitoring Team, led by Deputy Resident District Commissioner John Magezi, expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work. Magezi commended the contractor, noting the project’s potential to offer a sustainable solution for displaced traders.

The construction is reportedly around 70 percent complete, with the contractor expressing confidence in handing over the ground floor by August. This development has rekindled hope among vendors who have faced economic hardship due to the lack of adequate trading spaces.

Local leaders and residents have lauded Minister Lugoloobi’s efforts, anticipating that the new market will significantly improve the livelihoods of many families by providing a secure and organized place to trade. Kayunga Town Clerk Farida Kulabako confirmed that displaced vendors will receive priority allocation once the ground floor is ready, aiming to foster an organized trading ecosystem.

Upon its full completion, the market is expected to enhance business operations in Kayunga Town, fostering a cleaner, safer, and more organized trading atmosphere, ultimately boosting household incomes and local economic activity.
