The Church of Uganda has formally stated that the ‘Reformed Anglican Church’ is not affiliated with or recognized by them, nor the global Anglican Communion. The provincial secretariat issued a statement on June 25, 2026, expressing concern over the group’s unauthorized use of Anglican clerical attire, including collars, cassocks, and episcopal shirts, as well as Anglican worship traditions and hymns.
According to the Church of Uganda, this deliberate misrepresentation aims to create a false impression of legitimacy, misleading the public into believing the group is an authorized Anglican body. Provincial Secretary Rev. Canon William Ongeng emphasized that clergy claiming to represent the Anglican Church must be licensed and accountable to the Church of Uganda’s constitution and canons.
This dispute highlights a long-standing dynamic within Christianity where reform movements and theological disagreements have led to denominational divisions, dating back to the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. The Anglican tradition itself emerged from such historical ruptures. While the freedom to establish new religious ministries is acknowledged, established denominations assert the importance of protecting their distinct identities and symbols.
The Reformed Anglican Church, founded in 2020 and led by Archbishop Jonathan Kyangasha, states it follows Anglican liturgy and episcopal leadership but is not part of the official Anglican Communion, instead aligning with the Continuing Anglican movement. The Church of Uganda has warned that legal action may be pursued if the alleged misrepresentation continues, aiming to protect the integrity of Anglican doctrine and worship.
“Church of Uganda urges all Christians and members of the public to exercise vigilance and verify the authenticity of any person or ministry claiming to represent the Anglican Church,” the statement concluded.
