Buganda Minister Encourages Students to Embrace Kingdom's Rich History

Students from Kibuli Secondary School recently visited the Buganda Kingdom headquarters at Bulange, Mengo, for an educational tour aimed at fostering an appreciation for their cultural roots. The visit, intended to bridge classroom learning with tangible heritage, was met by kingdom officials, including the Minister of Information and Mobilisation, Israel Kazibwe Kitooke.

During his address, Kazibwe emphasized that a strong grasp of history is fundamental to forming one’s identity and contributing to nation-building. He shared insights into the deep origins of Buganda, explaining that the kingdom predates the legendary Kabaka Kintu and was once known as “Muwawa,” a term signifying a dispersed society.

The minister elaborated on the early inhabitants who lived in clan-based communities, with indigenous groups like the Nyange operating independently before the eventual centralization of power. He highlighted Kabaka Kintu’s pivotal role in uniting these scattered groups by collaborating with existing clan leaders, laying the groundwork for the structured clan system and traditional governance that characterize Buganda today.

Kazibwe urged teachers, particularly those instructing Luganda, to actively guide learners in understanding these historical foundations. He believes this knowledge empowers students to appreciate their heritage more fully.

Umar Ssengule Mugerwa, a teacher from Kibuli Secondary School, stated that the excursion was designed to help students connect their academic studies with their cultural identity. He expressed gratitude to the Buganda Kingdom for facilitating these learning experiences, which are crucial for strengthening students’ connection to their heritage.

This initiative underscores the kingdom’s commitment to cultural education and ensuring that younger generations remain connected to their historical and cultural legacy. The educational visits provide invaluable opportunities for students to learn directly from the source, reinforcing the importance of Buganda’s history in shaping contemporary identity.
