Lawyers in Uganda have embarked on a peaceful protest, voicing strong concerns over what they describe as escalating constitutional violations and abuses of human rights within the country. The Uganda Law Society (ULS) announced the suspension of all services and intentionally locked their offices on Thursday, with further actions planned for Friday.
In solidarity with victims of torture, lawyers are observing the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture by demanding an end to the erosion of the rule of law. ULS Vice President Anthony Asiimwe stated that lawyers would be dressed in black and gather at graveyards across the nation to mourn and advocate for justice, highlighting the severity of the situation.
“The court, which should be the bedrock of justice… judges who should be protecting the citizens are the ones removing all the necessary shields,” Asiimwe lamented, expressing disappointment with the judiciary’s perceived failure to uphold the constitution. He emphasized that the protest transcends political divides, affecting all Ugandans.
The strike specifically addresses alleged torture, arbitrary detentions, intimidation of legal professionals, and general misconduct in the administration of justice. The ULS headquarters in Kololo displayed a notice reading, “Closed, lawyers on strike, in solidarity with victims of torture.”
This action follows the recent abduction and charging of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, who is also representing opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, with misprision of treason. ULS maintains that Lukwago was merely performing his professional duties. The strike is expected to continue beyond Friday, with the intensity focused on the initial day’s events.
