Shifra Ainomugisha, a prominent Ugandan social entrepreneur and young leader, has been named the 2026 Commonwealth Young Person of the Year. This supreme accolade, part of the Commonwealth Youth Awards, celebrates remarkable young individuals from the 56 member states who are driving sustainable development and transforming their communities.

Ainomugisha’s innovative approach was initially recognized with the Africa Regional Winner title before she triumphed as the overall global victor. Her work centers on climate-smart agriculture and renewable energy solutions.

Through her organization, Solafam Uganda Ltd, Ainomugisha is revolutionizing farming practices. She integrates solar-powered irrigation and cold storage with artificial intelligence to enhance food security for smallholder farmers. This initiative aims to significantly cut down post-harvest losses, boost farm yields, and build stronger climate resilience in vulnerable communities.

Her projects have directly benefited over 1,500 individuals, focusing on sustainability, inclusive economic growth, and technology adoption. Ainomugisha expressed her gratitude, stating, “This recognition is not only a personal milestone but also a validation of the work we are doing to build resilient communities and create lasting impact. It reflects the power of young people across the Commonwealth to develop solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.”
