Star forward Neymar confessed to shedding tears alone in the dressing room following his emotional return to the Brazilian national team. The 34-year-old made his first appearance for Brazil in 981 days during their 3-0 World Cup triumph over Scotland in Miami.
Neymar, Brazil’s all-time top scorer, had been sidelined by a significant knee injury sustained in October 2023, followed by a calf issue that caused him to miss Brazil’s initial World Cup matches. His inclusion in the squad was uncertain, and his comeback appearance was eagerly anticipated by fans.
“It’s an immense relief to relive all this. It’s a moment of gratitude. I thank God for being able to experience this again,” Neymar told reporters after the match. He acknowledged that the team has evolved during his absence, stating he sees it with “fresh eyes” but expressed profound happiness at being back to play in a World Cup and represent his country.
Neymar, who has participated in four World Cups since 2014, has accumulated eight goals and four assists in the tournament. His return to the field, though brief, was met with fervent support from the Brazilian fans, who chanted his name.
Brazil secured a dominant 3-0 victory against Scotland, finishing at the top of Group C. The team is now set to face the runner-up from Group F in their next encounter in Houston on Monday.
