Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has issued a directive for the swift completion of outstanding civil works at the Moroto Clinker Factory, located in Katikekile. She highlighted the project’s strategic importance in curbing Uganda’s significant reliance on imported clinker, a vital component for cement manufacturing.

During a recent site visit, Nabbanja stressed the government’s commitment to making the factory fully operational as soon as possible. This initiative is seen as a key measure to support domestic industries and significantly reduce the nation’s import expenditure.

The Prime Minister, accompanied by several ministers including Monica Musenero (Science, Technology and Innovation) and John Baptist Lokii (Karamoja Affairs), noted that Uganda currently spends between USD 200 million and USD 300 million annually on clinker imports. Establishing local production capacity is therefore paramount to conserving foreign exchange reserves.

Once operational, the Moroto facility will produce clinker, thereby reducing the need for imports and actively supporting Uganda’s industrialization goals. “The establishment of this factory will reduce our import bill and contribute to the socio-economic development of Moroto in particular and Uganda at large,” Nabbanja stated.

The project is also expected to generate employment opportunities, stimulate economic activity within the Karamoja sub-region, and align with the government’s broader objectives of promoting value addition and import substitution strategies.

This directive is part of a larger government strategy to leverage the country’s mineral resources for industrial development and to strengthen the overall manufacturing sector, aiming for sustainable economic growth through increased domestic production.
