Mukono Xtreme Park, once a vibrant hub for action sports enthusiasts in Mukono, has been reduced to rubble. The facility, which featured a BMX freestyle dirt ramp and a skateboarding section, was a popular spot for young riders from the town and surrounding areas.

The demolition, stemming from a land dispute between the park owners and the Uganda Skateboarding Federation (USF), has left the skateboarding community reeling. The USF reportedly could not meet a substantial fee demanded by the landowners, leading to the park’s closure.

For the many young people who frequented MXP, the loss is profound. The park was more than just ramps and open space; it served as a daily meeting point, a crucial training ground, and a productive community center. Gerald Gose, founder of Uganda Skateboard Society, expressed concern over the immediate impact on riders who had integrated the venue into their routine.

Despite the setback, the USF is viewing this as an opportunity to establish a more permanent and secure facility. “We have an opportunity to build a bigger park,” stated USF president Moses Ddungu, adding that the federation is actively seeking suitable land and has partners ready to support the project.

While a new, larger park is the long-term goal, immediate solutions for the displaced riders are scarce. Uganda currently boasts established skateboarding facilities at Kiteezi and Kitintale, but these are located outside Mukono. The development of a new concrete skatepark of similar size could range from Shs92 million to Shs167 million, excluding land costs, highlighting the significant investment required.

The hope remains that this demolition marks the beginning of a stronger, more secure future for action sports in Mukono, providing a lasting home for its dedicated young athletes.
